Level 4 & Level 5 Finishes
Understanding Level 4 & Level 5 Finishes
When it comes to achieving a smooth, beautiful painted surface, the level of drywall finish plays an important role in the final result.
Level 4 Finish
Standard Professional Finish
A Level 4 finish is the standard for most homes. It includes taping, mudding, multiple coats of compound, sanding, and preparing the surface for paint. This level looks great under most lighting conditions and works well with eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss paints
Level 5 Finish
Premium Luxury Finish
A Level 5 finish includes everything in Level 4, PLUS a full skim coat applied across the entire surface. This creates the smoothest, most flawless finish possible. It’s ideal for rooms with strong lighting, large windows, or flat/matte paints that tend to show imperfections.
Level 5 costs more because it requires:
• Additional labour for the skim coat
• More material
• More sanding and surface prep
• Extra time to ensure a perfect finish
Tip: Most homeowners choose Level 4 for standard repaints, while Level 5 is recommended for ceilings, high-end projects, bright spaces, or when the smoothest result is desired.
White & Light Colours Requiring Additional Coats
Some white and very light paint colours are known in the industry for having low hiding ability.
Even with professional preparation and premium materials, these colours often require 3 or more coats to achieve a perfectly even, smooth finish.

Why extra coats may be needed:
• These colours reflect more light and show minor variations
• They have lower pigmentation, which reduces coverage
• Flat or matte finishes make coverage more challenging
• Previously dark walls or patched areas require additional build
This isn’t a reflection of the painter’s skill — it’s simply how these colours are formulated.
Many bright whites contain very little tint, which means they don’t cover as efficiently as standard colours.
Common examples include:
• Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White, Extra White, Pure White, and Snowbound
• Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, Decorator’s White, Simply White, and Super White
